Upper West Side

Landmarks

The Upper West Side is home to some of New York’s most well-known venues including Lincoln Center featuring the Metropolitan Opera House, and the New York City Ballet. The Upper West Side is also where you’ll find the American Museum of Natural History, the Children’s Museum of Manhattan, and Riverside Park which runs along the Hudson River. Just north of the neighborhood Columbia University, and there are plenty of shops and restaurants, particularly on Columbus Avenue and Amsterdam Avenue.

Transportation

The Upper West Side boasts excellent transportation options, which is why it’s such a preferred place for people to live. The West Side Highway runs along the neighborhood, and there is subway service via the local 1 train, and two express trains, 2 and 3. The trains stop at 72nd St. and 96th St. and the 1 stops at Columbus Circle and Lincoln Center as well. On weekdays the A and B serve the neighborhood, and there’s also service from the C and D.

Rent Prices

The price of rentals and real estate is relatively high on the Upper West Side, particularly in the high-rise and townhouse properties, but if you move more to the north, you’ll find that it tends to get more affordable. The average cost of rent for the Upper West Side is upwards of $3,800 and is higher than the overall median of NYC.
